The rubric "At the Periphery of Recognition" points to the Zen-like aspect of Bender's art, which cuts through the confinement of the rationally-ordered mind. For the artist, accident, gravity, and the fluid response of paint combine with human gesture to form a structured, though non-representational, unity. For the observer, limitless combinations of relationships among pictorial elements (strokes, colors, flows) form a higher-order whole, irreducible to the pictorial elements themselves, within which objects seem to arise and pass away with unexpected perceptual and emotional effects.
