Artist's Show Statement
I've always had a tenuous relationship with the camera - I joke that I love to take pictures because that means I don't have to be in pictures. In my personal life, I have very few casual photos of family or friends - I rarely bring my camera to birthdays, weddings, or family gatherings - and as someone who calls herself a photographer, this strikes me as odd, an aversion to something that also acts as an outlet. This series was inspired by that fear. I wanted to examine the ways in which we let pictures define us and shape us, to explore what a photograph captures beyond the 2-dimensional image. There are multiple layers to each photo in the series - the Polaroids, the final photographs, the interaction between the two, pictures within pictures - just as there are many layers within a person that cannot be captured on film.
