Artists Marc and Matt Schimsky, father and son, find great encouragement in sharing ideas, opinions and thoughts about their art with each other. They fuel each other’s enthusiasm and inspire each other with conversation and critiques of their artwork. “There are lots of father-and-son relationships that are based on sports. But our relationship is based on our love of art,” says Marc.
Marc and Matt frequently attend juried shows, art fairs, gallery openings and museum exhibitions together. “It’s not only fun, it’s immensely rewarding,” declares Marc. "Sometimes we work on perfecting our skills by sharing ideas and helping each other with technique," he adds.

    About Matt
Matt is a graduate of Bard College. He resides in Philadelphia with his dog, Molly. He writes and draws constantly and is fascinated by drawings done on the sides of notebooks and on the empty outer frames of printouts.

“There is something beautiful about the marks we make in places where no one else can see...” he confides.

"These drawings are, in short, records of the most simple on-going conversations between my brain and my hand,” he says. He sees them as small moments of thought, complex inside jokes.

Matt has pushed these drawings to the point where they stand alone as fascinating and meaningful artwork. “I have come to strongly believe that when an artist’s process begins with mindless doodles and drawings done while on the phone or over study notes that artist is making art honestly connected to his or her character - the way they hear, see, and feel their environment,” explains Matt.

    About Marc
Marc completed his MFA at Pratt Institute in 1976 and taught high school art for 35 years in Smithtown, NY. He and his wife are part time residents of Montrose, Pa.

Marc's paintings and mixed media works deal mainly with human experience and the passage of time. His representational works often reflect either experiences he has encountered while traveling or activities involving close family members and friends. Marc likes to work with an abundance of vibrant color and he keeps the brushwork in his paintings loose and expressive so as to capture a sense of movement and action in his subjects. Borrowing qualities found in photography, Marc often blurs parts of his figures in the hope of enhancing that sense of action.
Marc’s mixed media abstractions are purely fanciful. "I enjoy the intuitive and improvisational aspects of abstraction,” he explains. “It’s challenging and at the same time liberating for me.” Many of these pieces consist of flattened found objects strategically placed between layers of engaging textures or bits and pieces of discarded drawings.
Marc’s oldest son, Joshua, is a high school art teacher in Westbury, L.I. He and his wife, Amanda, just recently had their first child, Lucas. It is the family’s hope that there will be a father-and-sons exhibition in the future
