    About the Artist
My work as a bookbinder and boxmaker, deeply rooted in a centuries-old history of forms and structures, is nurtured by the contemporary culture of book arts and spring-fed by the environment, whose elements are more basic even than paper and board: They are the stuff of which paper and board are made, a reminder that the earth and what grows from it are unadulterated form, our original inspiration.

Thus, my book and box designs are based on traditional bookbinding techniques, and all are fully functional. The birch bark I gather is hand-peeled and cured according to historically proven methods. Each piece I create incorporates tree bark, twigs, shells, or mushrooms as structural or decorative elements. These natural materials contain their own narrative, which I seek to reveal in my work, and they richly illustrate and bring life to much of what the creative arts expresses about human experience.
