NYC: Viridian Artists is pleased to present a solo exhibit of photographs by Al Pierce, the winner of Viridian's 17th Annual Juried Competition. Entitled "People, Places, and Things", the images will be on view November 28 - December 16, 2006, with a reception for the artist occurring Saturday, December 2, 4 - 6 pm.
After being away from artistic expression for thirty odd years raising a family, building a career, dealing with people, going places, doing things, Pierce discovered that artistic expression was there all the while, relaxing in the shadows, waiting for just the right moment. Through the camera lens, the artist morphed careers from science and engineering into photography, painting, and sculpture.
As we know reality it is composed of shapes, colors, situations, and emotions that we observe and create for ourselves as well as for others. The artist sees this show as a glimpse into his version of reality, sometimes capturing a fleeting moment, other times a unique view of a timeless scene, placed there by intent or circumstance.
Some of his imagery intentionally pays homage to the artistry of others that he finds compelling by giving them notice again, but through his eyes and lens, as a tribute perhaps to the genius of those that lived and breathed life into their art many centuries ago.
Sometimes the artist intentionally uses hidden subjects as a puzzle for the viewer to solve, sometimes his intention is just to provoke a smile. When people are his subject his aim is to capture the essence of their emotion with the thought of stimulating emotion in the viewer.
The artist says "I try to "see" past the labels placed on things and view them in a new light by either focusing intensely on those things that might be easily overlooked in our day to day existence, or by intentionally distorting and recomposing common scenes into new visions of colors or shapes that may only vaguely resemble the original."
On view are 24 photographs, in both color and monochrome, ranging from 8" X 10" up to 20" X 30" and shot with a digital SLR camera and printed archivally on paper or canvas. The photographs span a time period from early 2005 to the present.
The artist's hope is to convey to the viewer his fascination with the world he sees through the camera lens and cause them to wonder...Who are these people? Where are these places? What are these things?
