Joan Mead-Matsui is a self-taught artist who creates full time in the art of Chigirie (pronounced chee gee ree aei) Japanese Torn Paper Collage Art, a highly specialized centuries’ old Japanese art form that involves tearing and layering pieces of pre-dyed Japanese paper. Chigirie means painting with paper although no paint is used in the process. She’s been working in Chigirie since 1996.
